Under the Hula Moon : Living in Hawaii
Published in Hardcover by Crown Pub (November, 1992)
Author: Jocelyn Fujii
Average review score:

A Fabulous Dream Book For Hawaii-lovers!
It is a shame that Jocelyn's wonderful, dreamy love letter to living in Hawaii is out of print. For starters, the dust jacket is pretty enough, but the book itself is bound in a handsome Hawaiian fabric print. Inside, colors jump off the page as homes ranging from surfers' one-room beach town digs to graceful Nuuanu mansions set you to fantasizing about living in Paradise. Chapters are divided into such themes as paniolo [cowboy] homes, mountain homes, beach homes, contemporary, plantation houses ranging in style from bare bones to elegant...the entire gamut is covered. There are delightful details and tableaux pictured everywhere, showing home dwellers' tabletop arrangements, Hawaiiana collections, hand crafted koa wood furniture, beautiful one of a kind local crafts...I could go on and on about the richness and variety of material in Under The Hula Moon. I write Hawaii guidebooks for a living and spend a lot of time in the islands, looking at the outside of peoples' homes, wondering what's going on inside. Since I'm not the type to just knock on strangers' doors to ask for a tour, Jocelyn has taken me into wonderful places I would otherwise never see.from0AAnyone who has fallen under Hawaii's spell and has ever fantasized about moving to the islands will treasure this book and spend many long hours with it in a favorite reading spot. Few books have given me the years of enjoyment that Jocelyn Fujii's has, and until some publisher has the good sense to bring it back into print, it is worth the seach to find a copy.

shaka, brah
I am sorry that I generously gave out as many copies of this far out book without saving a single copy for myself, because now I can't find it anywhere except at my friends' homes. And they all want to keep it as a reference for their visitors from the mainland.

Excellent Coffee Table Book!
If you looking for something that will catch your eye, and that you can just sit down, relax, and browse ... then this is book for you! It's a great book have around for others to look at and see Hawai`i through other people's eyes. It's always great to see how many different people can find the beauty in this paradise.

Warpath Across the Pacific: The Illustrated History of the 345th Bombardment Group During WWII
Published in Hardcover by International Research & Publishing (November, 1996)
Author: Lawrence J. Hickey

Strafers and Parafrags
This is the standard to which all military unit histories should conform. There is a wealth of information here - from training to combat deployment to VJ Day. The text covers the personalities, battles and tactics, and contains many personal accounts. The photos are superb and plentiful, and are complemented by color photos. Even better are the 55 color aircraft profiles, covering markings and camoflage from beginning to end. I wish that all of the unit histories that I own were produced to this standard.

Best war documentary I've read yet.
Having an Uncle that served with the 345th, I found the detail to be amazing. The accounts and memories of the people interviewed glues you to your seat and gives a fresh perspective of what it was like when war wasn't so cut and dry. Excellent pictures and text. My personal interest made it even more interesting. I found it to be very accurate and concise.

An exciting and important historical document.
Few books ever achieve the level of excellence that this volume has. The amount of time and effort that made this book happen is very obvious. From the first days of training in the United States through VJ day in 1945, this book reads almost like a day by day diary of the 345TH bomb group. Most of the photos are published here for the first time from private collections, and their overall quality is amazing. The interviews are written almost exactly as they were dictated; nothing is cencored or changed to be "politically correct". Some areas of the text are humerous to read, while others are sad and often very graphic in the details given. It shows a side of the war that is not often dealt with in great detail. I consider it a privilage to own this volume, and would recommend it to anyone who wants to read a true aviation history from crewmen who were there.

Washington for Women: A Guide to Working and Living in the Washington Metropolitan Area

Very Informational
This book is very helpful. It provides a world of information that will help anyone be able to get around and get involved in their community.

Great tool for women anywhere!
This is one of the greatest resource books I've ever used! It is so comprehensive, in that it provides resource information for everything from professional associations to book clubs. I'm a Guidance Counselor for the US Army, and I've used it on several occassions in counseling women on career matters. What was really astounding was that all of the phone numbers I called were correct! Many of the organizations are National and therefore are not only helpful to women in the Washington area, but for women throughout the country as well. The only other thing that I could say is thankyou , to the author for providing such a valuable tool for women. It has enriched and enhanced my life in many ways.

Extremely Informative............
This book relenquishes a wealth of information and services that are available in the Washington D.C. area.

Washington State Bed & Breakfast Cookbook (Peppermint Press B & B Cookbook Series, #2)

Harvest Party Prizewinner!
I made the Paula's Easy Decadent Chocolate Trifle for a Neighborhood Harvest Party, and I won the award for the best dessert brought! People raved about it and said it was awesome -- beautiful and delicious! One of the neighbors decided to purchase the cookbook to give to her daughter who was wanting an outstanding dessert to serve for a party.

One of the best lamb recipes on the planet!!!!
There are so many different and wonderful recipes, it's hard to start. But I have to tell you about the Beer Braised and Balsamic Vinegar Lamb with Rosemary White Beans. Give me a break!!! I couldn't even read the recipe without salivating!! (How embarassing!) It is one of the most unusual orchestrations of flavors I've ever experienced!! This is a special dinner, a night when you polish the silver candlesticks, chill some nice wine, and hope for rain, because you won't want anyone disturbing you at this dinner. The only thing I'd add, are a few of your best friends, then enjoy this elegant culinary event!!

Info on B & B's, scrumptious recipes, artistically presented
This book contains illustrations, descriptions, and 11 specific items of information about 85 different Bed and Breakfast Country Inns in the state of Washington plus their most requested or favorite recipes. I especially liked one simply called "Bubble Bread" which included nuts, brown sugar, butterscotch pudding mix, and cinnamon in the ingredients!! The book lies flat when opened, has a beautiful hard cover, and is attractively printed in two colors. The authors also thoughtfully included tables of oven temperature equivalents, baking pan sizes, liquid and dry measures (including metric conversions), and high altitude adjustment suggestions. A special feature appearing throughout the book is entitled "Carol's Corner" where one of the authors records hints and happenings which developed during the testing of all recipes submitted. Tantalizing titles of some of the recipes are Banana Blueberry Muffins, Northwest Salmon Pie, Santa Cruz Sweet and Sour Zucchini Salad, Apple Breakfast Lasagna, Comeback Hash, and Paula's Easy Decadent Chocolate Trifle. You'll love the book for yourself and it would make a much-appreciated gift.

A Waterfall Lover's Guide to the Pacific Northwest: Where to Find Hundreds of Spetacular Waterfalls in Washington Oregon and Idaho
Published in Paperback by Mountaineers Books (June, 2003)
Authors: Gregory Alan Plumb and Greg Plumb
Average review score:

Made my vacation!
Used this book exclusively on my recent "waterfall tour" of Oregon and Washington. I wanted to make the most of day hikes to areas that had waterfalls. This book allowed me to plan my day-to-day itineraries and cram the most into the trip. Invaluable for a true waterfall lover. Waterfalls listed by geographical areas. Descriptions of some trailheads hard to follow, but maps were good. Decribes the difficulty to reach each fall (easy to need to be a bushwacking expert).

My only disappointment is the newly built bridge near Elowah Falls that ruins the natural beauty of the falls... (not the author's fault).

Very good
Great book, we had never been in these areas and were able to find everything very easily.

Never be lost again! :)
This is an amazing book on locating the beautiful waterfalls of the Pacific Northwest. I own 2 of these books, 2nd and 3rd edition, and let me tell you, it has never let me down.

The book gives great detail and levels of the waterfalls quality, difficultly of the hike and much more. It even teaches you on how to determine the type of waterfall that you are viewing.

Mr. Plumb is the ultimate Mountaineer, and shows it through this amazing book. I call it my, "Waterfall Bible".

I highly recommend it for all your searches for waterfalls, and even some that you didn't know existed -- great for picinics, extremists, photographers, and for those just in awe of their beauty!

Don't pass this up, and at such a great price!

West Coast Seafood: The Complete Cookbook
Published in Paperback by Sasquatch Books (June, 2003)
Author: Jay Harlow
Average review score:

Easy and yummy recipes
Living in Seattle we wanted to take advantage of all the fresh fish available, but we had no idea how to cook it. Everything we have tried out of this book has been easy and delicious. Most of the recipes give suggestions for side dishes which makes meal planning even easier. Whenever we get fish for dinner this is the cookbook we pull out!

The "gotta' have" seafood book for West Coast dwellers
This is a great reference for cooks at any level of ability. Fundimentals of buying, cutting up, basic techniques, and cooking safety. Easy to follow recipes which are not fussy and don't loose the flavor of the seafood in the sauces, yet can be quite sophisticated. Expanded information, definitions and seafood facts which can enlighten profesional chefs and intertain those who pick-up cookbooks for leasure reading. For example, what constitutes 'white fish',who are the grazers and the predators in the ocean, and how is caviar farmed.

Easy to follow - Outstanding Taste
This book is wonderful for cooks that use seafood comes from the California coast. The recipes do not take require the resume of a rocket-scientist and yet the finished courses look, taste and smell like fine cuisine from a highly rated restaurant.

Great recipes for every day or special entertaining occasions.

Where Do I Sleep? : A Pacific Northwest Lullaby

Authors: Jennifer Blomgren and Andrea Gabriel
Average review score:

Enchanting and imaginative!
This book is absolutely one of the most beautifully illustrated children's books I have seen in a long time. The pictures capture the attention of both young children and adults alike. The clever story is also easy for kids to understand, while at the same time, educational. My kids love this book, and it would be a wonderful addition to your collection!

What a lovely book.
I just purchased this book after hearing the illustrator speak. The pictures are bright and soft, the text musical and sweet. It just won the 2002 Pacific Northwest Book Award. A beautiful addition to any picture book library.

It's so hard to find a good children's book like this
I appreciate a change from the usual cast of children's books characters (cat, dog, cow, horse): this book features otters, bats, foxes, anemones, eagles, and so on. The poems are great: the author rounds out the lines without useless filler words such as "very," "really," and "quite." Soothing verses and gentle pictures make this an excellent children's book. If you're from the Pacific Northwest, you must add this to your collection; if you're from anywhere else, you'll want to.

"A must for residents and tourists alike"
This book is a great resource for anyone. The calendar of events makes it a breeze to find dates and times of your favorite things to do on the Monterey Peninsula.

The "ultimate" tour guide!
This is the "ultimate" tour guide to beautiful Monterey County, CA (referred to by the locals as Paradise). It truly is invaluable as a resource for locals and tourists alike. I've lived here for 15 years and can't believe there are so many wonderful things to do and see...for FREE! Unlike any other tour guide.

Essential reading for visitors to Monterey County, CA.
The Ultimate Field Guide to Monterey County this beautifully organized book is a must for visitors and residents of central California's most acclaimed region. From the famous shoreline of the Monterey Peninsula to Steinbeck's Pastures of Heaven and the nation's great salad bowl in the Salinas Valley this edition covers it all. 100 Hikes in California's Central Sierra & Coast Range
Published in Paperback by Mountaineers Books (February, 1995)
Authors: Vicky Spring and Vicki Spring
Average review score:

100 Hikes in CA Central Sierra...
Excellent book with an easy to follow layout. Mostly geared towards moderate to "difficult" hikes with overnight backpacks, or longer dayhikes, the most common. Lists 100 hikes and, in general, they spend 2 pages per hike, with directions to the trail head, max elevation, elevation gain, etc. They also give a sketched map and a photo for each.

This book is geared more towards the serious hiker/BPer, not the 2 mile family dayhike type.

I have done about 10 of the listed hikes and have found the info accurate.

One note: Some of the kiosks they list to get wilderness permits are no longer in operation. To be safe, plan on getting wilderness permits at the ranger station.

Excellent guide to backpacking highlights of the Sierra
I've used this book extensively over the past 3 years and have hiked over 20 of the routes described here. It is excellently laid out (it uses highways to organize the treks) and features an excellent and varied selection of short and long trips. I own most of the guides to the Sierra and this is the one I use most regularly.

The book is also very durable - mine has fallen in rivers, gotten scrunched against rocks, been boiled and frozen and is still perfectly serviceable.

For anyone who is trying to get their head around the central Sierra and identify some good trips - this is the ideal book.
